what's the difference in plug with #5 heat range versus plug with #3 heat range. How do you determine what plug is better. I have "57 Chevy truck with 383 motor with a high lift cam (520 lift).

you have to keep the heat range in the self cleaning range, so the higher the compression or more accurately the higher the cylinder pressures the colder the plug you need because of the amount of heat it will make or you will cause self ignition. but you also do not want to go too cold or you will have fouling of the plugs. so in your case, 10.5-1 & up use the 3's. 10.4-1 and down use the 5's.
