Unlike other heavy-duty air filters that are non-serviceable 1-piece units, the filtration medium of a K&N Heavy-Duty Air Filter can be removed from its canister. The medium is a hybrid of synthetic material and aluminum screen wire.     Note: "S" or "R" at the end of a part number indicates direction of air flow through the media: Standard (white on the inside) or Reverse (white on the outside). "Standard" flows air from the outside in; "Reverse" flows air from the inside out. The media is designed to flow one way ("depth loading"). Air flow going the wrong way can cause clogging ("surface loading"). K&N recommends using a filter only in its intended direction.
