MSD Performance from Start to Finish

MSD DynaForce Starters feature a 3.4 horsepower motor to crank over the reduced 4.4:1 gear set to deliver great torque to get the engine turning. The armature is balanced during assembly and is guided by two ball bearings for smooth engagement and thousands of starts. The downsized housing clears most headers and oil pans, but just in case, MSD made the billet mount so it can be clocked in different positions to help in tight applications. The DynaForce Starter is powder coated MSD red and will stay looking good, even though it's underneath your car. DynaForce Starters are never rebuilt or refurbished units.

    High Torque Starter Features
  • 3.4 HP motor provides quick starts
  • Powdercoated starter assembly for long-lasting good looks
  • Gear reduction of 4.4:1 improves torque for great cranking
  • Armature guided by two ball bearings for smooth engagement
  • Downsized housing clears most headers and oil pans
  • Billet aluminum mount plate can be clocked to help in tight applications
  • Easily handles up to 18:1 compression
  • Made in the USA

    High Speed DynaForce Starters
If you struggle to start your race engine because the starter can't keep up then this High Speed DynaForce Starter is what you are looking for. It is designed for race engines using magnetos that require higher cranking speed and provides 25% extra speed so even the most stubborn motor will start.

    High Speed Starter Features:
  • For use on blown alcohol engines, magneto ignitions, or any engine requiring higher cranking RPM
  • Additional 25% cranking speed
  • 3.73:1 Gear Reduction
  • Heavy Duty high temp solenoid for 12-16 volt systems
  • Plated disc and contacts reduce arcing and increase continuity
  • Billet aluminum adjustable mounting block
  • Made in the USA

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't fit. Bought this starter for my 71 Charger with a stroked 440 (68 block) and the bracket is too big and hits the block do the mounting holes don't line up. Clocking the starter doesn't help. I ground down the mounting block, but then the housing hits the block. Now I have to decide if I'm going to ground down my block or see if they'll take back a butchered starter. If not, it's a pretty expensive paper weight. I was really hoping to find a starter that could stand up to the heat from my headers.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't Fit If you have a 426 hemi with TTI headers, the starter does not fit. I tried all of the different clocking positions and they all hit the headers in someway. The starter does look like a nice piece though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 5098 vs. 50981 First, allow me to say, this review is particular to 'my' application/installation, and should not be construed for all circumstances. I originally bought the 50981 (clockable) DynaForce starter for my early 70's 440 mopar, but unfortunately, I had a very small interference issue. The housing around the gear, (not the aluminum mounting plate, but the red portion of the housing), protruded just enough to hit the engine block. No clocking would correct the inference. This interference, of the starter housing with the engine block, misaligned the top hole of the starter mounting plate with the threaded hole in the engine. I probably could have taken a file and flatten that area of the housing causing the interference, say 1/32" to make it fit. Nonetheless, I exchanged the 50981 with the nonclockable 5098. The 5098 fit perfectly, and works perfectly. My only discord with the 5098 is with the location of the terminals, as they are mounted on top (in the installed position), not to the side like the 50981, and they proved somewhat difficult to get to. These Dynaforce starters are high quality, look great, small, lightweight, and powerful. Glad I made the purchase.
