Regular bolts are knurled to compensate for inconsistencies in OEM bolt holes. These knurls cut deeply into the bolt material, leaving sharp notches and enormous ''stress risers'' that promote failure. Straight shank bolts can be either too tight or loose causing cap misalignment and a variety of more serious problems.
