Ideally, the exhaust cut out should be in a position so that when it is open, the exhaust will easily exit out from underneath the car and be low profile enough not to reduce ground clearance. You do not want carbon monoxide to leak into the passenger compartment when idling as this is dangerous to the driver and passenger's health. Once the location has been determined, the exhaust pipe needs to be cut, enough to allow the cutout to fit. The cutout is then either clamped or welded into place. If it has a cover plate with wingnuts, ensure they are tightened to prevent leaks. If you are installing an electric exhaust cutout, you will need to run the wiring into the passenger compartment with a switch to mount it where you can easily access it. You then just need to finish the wiring connections to complete installation. If you are using a manual control exhaust cutout, the cable needs to be routed and mounted where the knob can be accessed to open and close the valve.
