Timing Chain
For nearly every internal combustion engine with a camshaft and crankshaft, a timing chain, gear, or belt setup is used. These mechanical components ensure that the camshaft and crankshaft are in the correct position to allow optimum combustion to occur and prevent pistons from making contact with the valves. Timing chains are designed to fit to a camshaft and crankshaft sprocket, which have teeth, preventing the chain from slipping and causing performance problems or engine damage. Bad timing chain symptoms include a rattling sound in the timing chain cover area during startup and idle, engine misfiring, and when the chain breaks, engine damage from piston to valve interference. It is important to change a timing chain or chain and sprocket set at the recommended mileage or age to prevent breakage from occurring.
When choosing a replacement timing chain set, confirm the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle and match the application to the compatible timing set options.Timing chain replacement cost varies, ranging from around $10 to $200, depending on the application.
JEGS offers a large timing chain selection from the best brands in the aftermarket including Cloyes, COMP Cams, Melling, Sealed Power, JEGS, and many more.
