Upgrading a stock suspension to a drag racing suspension will greatly improve traction and handling at the track. The heavy-duty parts have less flex, allowing more energy from the drivetrain to get to the rear wheels. Less flex also creates better distribution of force to the suspension components, which more evenly plants both rear tires down on the racing surface.

Drag racing suspensions are designed to be adjustable, so you can fine-tune your vehicle for the best traction and handling possible. Example adjustable components include control arms, shocks, and sway bars. These adjustments affect how firm or soft the rear or front suspension is as well as ride height, pinion angle, and more. When all are correctly adjusted, the best handling and traction possible is achieved.

The best type of suspension for drag racing depends on a number of factors. These include the year, make, and model of the vehicle, vehicle weight, horsepower rating, and other factors. High performance drag racing suspension kits that offer adjustability are the most ideal. Although having adjustable components can lead to more time and trial-and-error required compared to stock design components, once properly setup, adjustable suspensions will give you the best traction and handling possible.

In most cases, the front suspension on drag vehicles is set up with the lightest springs possible that will not cause the shocks to bottom out. This allows the front end to lift and weight to shift to the rear tires (often lifting the front wheels during launch in high horsepower applications requiring the use of wheelie bars). Proper ride height has to be taken into consideration as well when changing coil springs. The rear suspension is usually set up to be stiff while allowing some compression, so that the tires are pressed hard into the track during launch to improve grip. This is accomplished with adjustable shock and spring combinations.

There are many variables that affect traction and handling at the drag strip. In general, the majority of suspensions are set up to be stiff on the prepped tracks (with traction compound applied), and softer on non-prepped tracks. Ultimately, it will be necessary to make adjustments until the optimum performance is achieved, whether adjusting the shocks, or swapping out springs.
