Strange Engineering prides itself on supplying the best product for your application. Therefore, when manufacturing axles it is necessary to manufacture two types of axles; induction hardened S/S & S/T Series Axles and thru-hardened Pro Race Axles. Every Strange axle is manufactured by Strange Engineering from superior grade forgings. S/S & S/T axles are produced from 1550 steel that has been modified to Strange Engineering specifications. Pro Race Axles are made from Hy-Tuf, which is a high nickel Ultra-Strength steel. S/S, S/T and Pro Race axles are all NHRA & IHRA accepted.
S/S Axles
Strange S/S axles are designed to meet the demanding bending loads of street use. Strange S/S axles are manufactured by Strange from modified 1550 steel. After extensive research and testing, Strange's R&D department determined that 1550 steel in conjunction with specified percentages of additional elements created the bases for the strongest induction hardened axles available. Each S/S street axle is induction hardened to its optimal hardness with Strange designed tooling. S/S splines are hobbed to the proper involute spline form- before heat treatment. The S/S's giant 1.5635" axle bearing diameter and bearing shoulder radius is precisely machined to accept a special radius ring, which minimizes stress concentrations in the bearing area. Strange provides a billet aluminum brake register to properly locate the center of your disc/drum brake system. Strange does manufacture Ford 9" 28-spline axles (that are stronger than OEM) for low horsepower and lightweight street-rod applications. However, 28-spline S/S axle shafts are significantly (38%) torsionally weaker in comparison to 31-spline S/S axles. So we strongly recommend you upgrade to 31-spline axle shafts for street applications.
S/S Axles are available for 9" 31-spline, as well as limited applications for 9" 28-spline, 9" 33-spline, Mopar 8.75" 30-spline, GM 30 & 33-spline. 5/8" wheel studs available at an additional cost.
S/T Axles
Strange S/T Series 35-spline axles are designed to meet the rigorous loads of street and strip use. S/T Series axles are identical to S/S axles in everyway except for the massive 1.50" (35-spline) shaft diameter. S/T axles carry a Strange Engineering three year replacement guarantee against spline breakage.
S/T Axles are available for 9" 35-spline (must use 3.250" carrier) as well as limited applications for Dana 60 and Mopar 8.75". 5/8" wheel studs available at an additional cost.
Pro Race Axles
Designed for drag race applications
- Involuted splines for increased strength
- Forged from Hy-Tuf for optimal grain structure
- Thru-hardened for superior torsional strength
- NHRA & IHRA contingency programs available
- Five year replacement guarantee for 33- & 35-spline axles
- 5/8" wheel studs available at an additional cost
Strange Pro Race axles are forged from Hy-Tuf alloy steel that was originally developed for highly stressed landing gear in military aircraft. Hy-Tuf was originated in the class of Ultra-Strength alloys. The Hy-Tuf forging is a low carbon, high manganese, high-nickel and high molybdenum steel. Strange Pro racing axles are thru-hardened, which allows for a drag racing shaft with an exceptionally high tensile strength (240,000 PSI) while retaining ductility.
