Top Dead Center Stop Tool
An automotive engine top dead center (TDC) stop tool is a specialized tool used to locate the piston at top dead center during engine timing and synchronization. Understanding how to use a top dead center stop tool is straightforward. There are two types of TDC tools. The first type of TDC stop tool is designed to fit into the spark plug hole of the engine and stop the piston at the top of its stroke. The tool typically consists of a threaded shaft with a stopper on the end that is inserted into the spark plug hole. The engine is then turned over by hand until the piston comes into contact with the stopper, indicating that the piston is at TDC. This allows you to accurately set the timing and synchronization of the engine components such as the crankshaft, camshaft, and distributor. The second type of TDC tool is for use with the cylinder heads off of the block. The tool mounts to the top of the block and when the piston reaches TDC by hand, it makes contact with the tool. Proper use of the TDC stop tool is critical to prevent damage to the engine components and ensure proper engine operation.

When selecting a top dead center tool, first narrow the options down between those that are used with the cylinder heads off, and those that are designed to be used with the cylinder heads on. From the remaining compatible options, choose the TDC tool that best fits your application needs as well as your budget.
