Drive Shaft
Connecting the transmission, transfer case, or transaxle to the rear axle or wheel hubs on cars and trucks is a drive shaft or half shaft. This component typically has a movable joint on each end to allow for suspension travel at the wheels. The driveshaft is either slipped or bolted into place at either end. Often, the joints wear and degrade from use, requiring repair or replacement.
While drive shaft repair is an option in some cases, often replacement is a quicker option. When selecting a driveshaft for a factory replacement, it is important to confirm the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle. In addition, the transmission (manual or automatic) and drivetrain type (i.e. 2WD, AWD, etc.) may also be applicable to the correct part number. When selecting a custom or racing driveshaft, it is important to confirm the transmission model and tailshaft housing for proper slip yoke fitment as well as the universal joint size and type for rear axle pinion yoke compatibility. The length of the driveshaft is also critical, as the incorrect dimensions will cause damage to the vehicle.
