Comp Cams Applications:

Comp Cams Hydraulic Roller Camshafts are typically used for street to mild race applications. Roller cams are common in vehicles these days. They use a lifter with a roller on it that reduces friction in the valvetrain, freeing up more power. The lobe profile of a roller cam allows for a steeper lobe ramp. This allows quicker valve movement as the cam lobe moves a valve open or closed. Roller lifters are typicall quieter than standard hydraulic lifters. Comp Cams offers a number of different roller cams for your engine.

Comp Cams Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshafts are used for moderate street to serious race situations. Comp Cams hydraulic flat tappet camshafts allow for higher engine RPM and a more agressive profile. Long term wear is not as good as other cam choices. Valve adjustment is necessary more often on this type of valvetrain. These cam/lifter combinations usually produce a ticking sound when the engine is started. Once the engine warms, the ticking subsides or goes away. The ticking occurs because of the nature of the lifter. Flat tappet lifters do not expand as the engine warms up. Valve lash has to be set on a warm engine to be correct.

Comp Cams Solid/Mechanical Flat Tappet Camshafts perform best for moderate street to serious race situations. Solid Flat Tappet Camshafts allow higher engine RPM and an agressive profile. Wear and the need for valve adjustments are issues with this style of cam. Engine building is a give and take endeavor. To gain performance sometimes means giving up longevity or increasing maintenance over other cam options.

Comp Cams Solid/Mechanical Roller Camshafts are mostly for serious street to extreme race applications. This type of cam and valvetrain set-up gives the best of both worlds: Higher RPM potential and reduced friction with the roller lifters. The drawback is still periodic valve adjustments.
