Scat Crankshafts
Scat is a leader in developing performance automotive crankshafts. More notably, they know exactly how to lighten a crank to reduce the rotating mass. The benefits of lightened internal engine parts is significant for speed. Scat primarily offers more than 300 different rotating assmeblies, more than 90 forged cranks and over 50 different rods. In adddition, Scat makes pistons, engine bearings, flexplates and dampers to round out the engine parts linked to the rotating assembly.
Scat maufacturing is a very large machine shop. Utilizing 15 crankshaft grinders and polishers, 25 CNC machines and a connecting rod line, Scat produces some of the best performance engine parts available.
If you want to reduce rotating mass on a crank, there are a few key points to understand. First, there is a difference between making a crank lighter to reduce rotating mass and making a race car lighter by simply reducing the crank weight. A lighter race car will go faster. However, depending on how you lighten a crank, it may or may not reduce rotating mass. That depends on how, or where, you remove material on the crankshaft. You have to be very careful removing the mass of a crank. Strength still has to be a top concern. It won't matter how light your crank is if it's in 2 pieces. Scat has a special process that they developed to remove crankshaft weight where it counts without making it weaker.
