Air Filters And Cleaners For Carburetors & Fuel Injection
An air cleaner for carburetor and fuel-injected engines keeps dirt out of your intake while letting the engine breathe. This category covers carburetor air cleaner assemblies, replacement round and oval elements, panel filters for EFI vehicles, and the hardware that holds it all together. Use the guidance below to match neck size, element dimensions, base style, and filter media to your build.

What Types of Carburetor Air Cleaners and Filters Can You Choose?
You can buy a complete air cleaner assembly, a replacement element for the housing you already run, or just the hardware that mounts it. Most builds use one of these setups:
- Round air cleaner assemblies with a base, lid, and element in flat, dropped, or raised base styles
- Oval air cleaner kits, such as 12 x 8.5 in. designs, for tighter engine bays
- Flow-thru air cleaners with a filter top that pulls air in from the top and sides
- Replacement round elements, including Edelbrock Pro-Flo 3 in. tall black elements
- Hardware such as knurled nuts for oval air cleaners, hose clamps, silicone connectors, spacers, and lids
An open-element air cleaner exposes the full filter circumference, while a flow-thru lid adds a second path for air. If you're still picking a carb, choose from our high-performance carburetors first, then size the air cleaner to match.
How Do You Choose the Right Air Cleaner for Carburetor Setups?
Start with the neck diameter, then pick an element that fits under your hood and meets your airflow needs. Most 4-barrel carburetors use a 5-1/8 in. neck, so most carburetor air filter assemblies are built around that size. Proform air cleaners include a 4-7/32 in. neck adapter for carbs with smaller necks.
Next, compare element diameter and height. K&N flow data shows that a wider element relative to its height generally flows better. For example, a 10 x 2 in. element generally out-flows a 5 x 4 in. element.
That's why the 14-inch air cleaner is so common on 4-barrel builds, with 14 x 3 in. as a popular element size. If you run an Edelbrock carb, our Edelbrock 1406 vs 1906 carburetor comparison helps you confirm which model you're sizing for.
Should You Choose a Drop Base or Flat Air Cleaner Base?
Choose a drop base when your hood sits close to the carb, and a flat base when you have room to spare. A drop-base air cleaner lowers the element around the carb neck, which recovers hood clearance without shrinking the filter. A raised base lifts the element when clearance isn't a concern.
Check the net height from carb flange on every listing. For example, the JEGS 14 in. x 3 in. drop-base air cleaner has 2.68 in. of net height. The 14 x 2 flat version measures 2.18 in.
Measure from the carb flange to the underside of your hood, then compare that number with the listed net height. Leave room for the lid nut and normal engine movement. When you've confirmed the fit, shop all air filters and cold air kits to compare base styles side by side.
Which Replacement Air Filter for Fuel Injection Fits Your Vehicle?
Shop by year, make, and model, because factory replacement filters are matched to a specific housing. Most of the grid here is FRAM Extra Guard filters in flexible panel, rigid panel, round plastisol, and metal-end designs. Listed fitments include 1965-76 Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models, the 1983-97 Ford V8, and the 2011-17 Chevy Equinox.
On a fuel-injected engine, the panel filter sits in the airbox ahead of the throttle body. That makes it the throttle body air filter that protects your sensors and intake from dirt. Round plastisol and metal-end filters drop into factory round housings on older vehicles.
If you want more airflow than a stock-style filter, look at cold air intake kits. Converting a carbureted engine? Browse fuel injection systems and read our carburetor vs. EFI comparison first.
Cotton Gauze or Paper: Which Filter Media Fits Your Build?
Choose washable cotton gauze if you want a reusable element, or white paper if you prefer a low-maintenance, replace-when-dirty filter. Cotton gauze elements are cleaned and re-oiled, so one element can last through many service cycles. Pre-oiled elements arrive ready to install, which saves a step on a new build.
Paper elements are simple to swap and suit daily drivers and stock-style restorations. Whichever media you choose, JEGS recommends servicing the element every 12 months or 6,000 miles. Dusty roads, track days, and long storage can call for more frequent checks.
A clean element matters more than a bigger one if you're chasing power. To see where intake upgrades fit in, read our guide on how much horsepower a cold air intake adds. Then match the media to how you drive and how often you're willing to service it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Cleaner for Carburetor
Does an air cleaner fit a throttle body EFI system?
In many cases, yes. Throttle body EFI systems mount on a carb-style flange, so carb-style air cleaners fit many TBI setups. Check the neck diameter and net height before you order.
Can I use an air cleaner without a filter element?
You shouldn't. The element is what traps dirt, so running without one lets debris go straight into the carb and engine. If you need more airflow, choose a larger element or a flow-thru lid instead.
Will a bigger air cleaner add horsepower?
Only if your current air cleaner is restricting airflow. A larger element can't add power beyond what your carb and engine can use. If your current setup already flows enough, the gain will be small or none.
What's the difference between an air cleaner and an air filter?
The air cleaner is the full assembly, including the base, lid, element, and mounting hardware. The air filter is the element inside it. On most fuel-injected vehicles, the filter sits in a factory airbox instead of an open housing.
What holds the air cleaner on the carburetor?
A stud threads into the carburetor and passes through the lid, and a nut on top clamps the assembly down. Oval air cleaners often use knurled nuts, which you can tighten by hand. Pick a stud long enough to reach through the lid with full thread engagement for the nut.
