Performance car alternators are designed to provide increased charging output that will maintain your vehicle's electrical system and battery when additional electrical components are added such as stereo systems, electric cooling fans, ignition boxes, fuel pumps, and other parts. Alternators are available with power options between 80 amps and 300 amps are available with a built-in / internal regulator.

Performance alternators are offered in different finishes, including polished, chrome-plated, black, and more. This allows you to customize the look under your vehicle's hood and compliment other engine components. In addition, custom alternators are available in different styles, allowing you to upgrade from a V-belt to a serpentine belt, external to internal fan, and from a classic to modern look.

An alternator is a belt-driven component that is mounted to the front of the engine. When the engine is running, the pulley shaft spins a group of magnets around a coil, creating AC voltage. The AC voltage is then converted to DC voltage through the alternator rectifier, which is then connected to the battery. This voltage is used to power the electrical system and keep the battery at the properly charged level.

In most cases, factory-style alternators last between eight to ten years and up to 150,000 miles. The amount of time can vary, depending on the operating conditions.

There are many factors and reasons that cause alternators to go bad. Some of these include moisture, corrosion, excessive engine bay heat, poor quality materials and assembly, improper belt tension, as well as general wear and tear.

Depending on the type, the steps to rebuild alternators will change. However, for most applications, the first step is to disassemble the alternator fan, pulley, and spacer from the main alternator shaft by removing the main nut. Next, the housing bolts are removed to separate the two halves and then access the internal parts. Most internal parts are either bolted or pressed in place.
