Brake Boosters & Components
Brake boosters give you firm, easy stops, and JEGS has the parts to build or refresh power brakes on your hot rod, truck, or restoration. You'll find vacuum boosters in 7, 8, 9 and 11 in. sizes with single- and dual-diaphragm designs, plus check valves, brackets, and complete booster/master cylinder assemblies. Shop by fitment, firewall space, and engine vacuum so your pedal feels right the first time.

What Does a Power Brake Booster Do?
A power brake booster uses engine vacuum to multiply the force your foot puts on the brake pedal. It sits between the pedal and the master cylinder, so you get strong stops with far less leg effort.
Inside a vacuum brake booster, a rubber diaphragm separates two chambers that both hold vacuum at rest. When you press the pedal, a valve lets outside air into one side. The pressure difference pushes the diaphragm forward and drives the master cylinder harder than your foot could alone.
The booster only adds force. The master cylinder still turns that force into hydraulic pressure, so the two parts need to work as a matched pair.
Browse our full lineup of brake boosters and master cylinders, or compare master cylinders by bore size and mounting style. For bore size and residual valve questions, check our brake master cylinder FAQs.
How Do You Choose the Right Brake Booster Size?
Choose the largest booster that clears your firewall, engine, and steering parts, then match the diaphragm design to your space. A bigger diameter and more diaphragms both give you more assist.
Here's how the common sizes compare:
- 7 in. boosters fit tight engine bays with big-block engines, wide valve covers, or headers.
- 8 in. boosters balance assist and clearance for many street rods and muscle cars.
- 9 in. boosters match the Delco-style units found on select 1964-1972 GM cars.
- 11 in. boosters give the most assist for heavier cars, trucks, and drum brake setups.
A dual-diaphragm booster stacks two diaphragms in one housing, so a 7 or 8 in. dual unit gives more assist than a single-diaphragm booster of the same diameter. That makes JEGS universal 7 in. and 8 in. dual-diaphragm boosters good options for crowded engine bays.
Need a single-diaphragm unit? Speedmaster offers an 8 in. zinc booster, and Tuff Stuff builds an 11 in. single-diaphragm booster in black.
Check your engine vacuum before you buy. A low-vacuum camshaft can leave any booster short on assist, so measure at idle with a vacuum gauge first.
What Are the Signs of a Bad Brake Booster?
A hard pedal, a hissing sound, or an idle change when you press the brakes are the most common signs of a bad brake booster. Each one points to lost vacuum or a leaking diaphragm.
Watch for these symptoms:
- A hard pedal that takes more leg effort to stop
- A hissing sound under the dash when you press the pedal
- A rough idle or stall when you apply the brakes
- A hard first pedal after the engine has been off
Start with the simple checks. A cracked vacuum hose or failed check valve can mimic a bad booster, and both are quick to replace.
To test the booster, pump the pedal with the engine off to bleed down vacuum. Then hold light pressure and start the engine. The pedal should drop slightly as vacuum builds.
If the booster tests bad, replace it and inspect the master cylinder at the same time. If you open the hydraulic system on a Wilwood setup, see our guide on bleeding a brake system to get a firm pedal back.
Brake Booster Components and Mounting Parts
A booster needs the right check valve, grommet, bracket, pushrod, and vacuum line to work correctly. Replacing these small parts often fixes vacuum leaks and fitment problems without buying a new booster.
The check valve holds vacuum in the booster when engine vacuum drops. The JEGS check valve with a 3/8 in. hose barb fits common vacuum hose, and Dorman Products offers a check valve and grommet to seal the valve in the booster shell. You'll also find a plastic check valve breather.
Brackets locate the booster on the firewall and line it up with the brake pedal. JEGS offers booster brackets for 1955-1964 GM, 1967-1972 GM, and 1967-1972 Chevrolet truck firewall mounts. Leed Brakes makes a 1962-1974 GM A/F/X-body booster bracket, and there's a flat-firewall bracket with a 3-3/8 in. square bolt pattern.
Finish the install with master cylinder pushrods for correct pedal travel, plus master cylinder fittings and hardware to connect your lines. Replace master cylinder gaskets anytime you separate the master cylinder from the booster.
Should You Buy a Booster and Master Cylinder Together?
Yes, a matched booster and master cylinder is the simplest way to get correct pedal feel and fitment. The parts are designed to work together, so you skip the guesswork on bore size, pushrod length, and mounting.
Assemblies make the most sense for a manual-to-power brake conversion, when you're adding a booster where none existed. Browse master cylinder booster kits for complete setups, including the Detroit Speed brake booster and master cylinder assembly.
Leed Brakes offers boosters for 1964-1974 Mopar cars, 1976-1986 Jeep CJ models, and 1955-1968 full-size GM cars. Right Stuff assemblies are another option for power brake conversions.
Truck owners can compare options in our guide to brake conversion kits for GM and Chevy trucks. Once the booster is in, upgrade the rest of your brakes to match. Shop all brake boosters and components above to find the right fit for your build.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brake Boosters
Do you need to bleed the brakes after replacing a brake booster?
Usually not, as long as you leave the brake lines connected to the master cylinder. Many booster swaps let you unbolt the master cylinder and move it forward without opening the hydraulic system. If you disconnect any lines or replace the master cylinder, bleed the system before you drive.
Which way does a brake booster check valve go?
The check valve lets air flow from the booster toward the engine and blocks flow back into the booster. Most valves have an arrow or marking, so point it toward the intake manifold. If it's installed backward, you'll lose power assist.
Where should the booster vacuum hose connect?
Connect the booster to a full manifold vacuum port on the intake, below the throttle plates. Don't use a ported vacuum source, since it drops to almost nothing at idle. Use hose rated for vacuum so it won't collapse under load.
Does a brake booster work with both disc and drum brakes?
Yes, a vacuum booster works with disc/disc, disc/drum, and drum/drum setups. The master cylinder and valving change with the brake type, and the booster simply adds pedal force. Match the master cylinder to your brakes, then size the booster for your space and vehicle weight.
Can you rebuild a brake booster?
Some boosters can be rebuilt, but it takes special tools and parts that are hard to find for many older units. For most street and restoration builds, a new booster is the faster, more reliable fix. You can still replace the check valve, grommet, and pushrod on their own.
