The first step in adjusting the idle air and fuel mixture is to locate the screws. On Holley carbs, the idle mixture screw positions are located on the metering blocks (on either side of the main body). Typically, there are either two or four idle screws. On Edelbrock carburetors, these screws are on the front. When adjusting a carburetor idle mixture screw, the goal is to adjust it to the "lean-best" setting. To do this, with the engine warmed up and at idle, and using a vacuum gauge connected to engine vacuum (use the carburetor vacuum fitting below the throttle blades), turn one of the screws clockwise until you get the highest vacuum reading on your gauge. When you reach the highest vacuum reading, turn it counter-clockwise just a slight amount. If turning the screw clockwise does not increase vacuum, turn it counter-clockwise to ensure the screw is not set too far one way. Next, repeat the same process to the other idle mixture screw(s). Since changing one idle mixture screw affects the other, go back to the previous idle mixture screw and adjust it. Continue this adjustment between the screws (back and forth) until the highest vacuum reading is achieved for both. The idle screw adjustment process reduces the amount of unnecessary fuel at idle and prevents spark plug fouling as well as improving engine fuel efficiency.

Most large and small carburetor adjustment tools are used by rotation to either tighten or loosen a part (such as a power valve or jet) and to increase or decrease fuel (for example idle mixture and float adjustments) or engine speed (for example idle screw). The bits on the carburetor adjustment screwdrivers can vary between sockets, hexes, or screwdrivers (flat head or cross head / Philips).

In most cases, changes to a carburetor cannot be done properly without a carb adjustment tool. If what needs to be adjusted can be turned with your fingers, a tool isn't required. However, in most cases, most components on a carburetor are more than "finger-tight".
