Performance Ignition System Kits

Depending on the year, make, model, and engine, the components of an ignition system can vary. However, most engine applications use spark plugs to ignite the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. Connecting to the spark plugs are either spark plug wires or ignition coil packs. Ignition coil packs are used on distributorless ignition systems and provide voltage directly to the spark plug through a connecting boot. Ignition systems with distributors have a distributor cap that the spark plug wires connect to. Beneath the cap is a rotor button that spins from a connecting shaft that meshes via a gear at the camshaft. Voltage is sent to the distributor cap from an ignition coil through a coil wire. The voltage goes from the coil wire to the center of the distributor cap and jumps to the center of the rotor button, where it jumps up to each terminal on the distributor cap, heading out to the corresponding cylinder. The ignition coil is controlled by the ignition control module, which provides the correct timing from input provided from the distributor reluctor or pickup. Ignition control modules can be internal, fitting inside the distributor. They can also be external. Aftermarket ignition system boxes provide additional voltage, multiple sparks (in many cases), as well as options to modify timing for high compression, turbocharged, supercharged, or nitrous-injected engines.

There are several components you can test to confirm whether an ignition system component needs replaced or not. The testing requires a multimeter and specifications and instructions from a repair or shop manual for your specific vehicle and engine. The primary and secondary voltage on an ignition coil can be tested for resistance, confirming it is within the acceptable range per a manual. Spark plug wires can also be checked for resistance, depending on the manufacturer specifications. An ignition control module often can be tested at a local auto parts store with a special adapter cable harness. The ignition pickup and reluctor can also be checked with a multimeter. The distributor cap, rotor button, and spark plug wires can be visually inspected for wear and corrosion. Replacement is made on a judgment of how bad the contacts or components look.
