When learning how to replace the steering column shift mechanism, such as inside a Chevy steering column, keep in mind that there are different steps depending on the vehicle. Typically, the repair steps involve removing the steering column, removing the shift lever from the end of the column, removing the steering wheel to gain access to the shift mechanism, and removing the required inner parts. To properly remove and replace the steering column shift mechanism, the best resource is a shop manual to make the repair as easy as possible.

A steering column connects the driver, via the steering wheel, to the steering linkage, which controls vehicle direction. The steering column transfers driver input to a steering gear box, which then moves steering components to turn the wheels either left or right.

If you need to know how to lubricate a steering column, whether it be a GM steering column or any other make, the first thing to do is remove the column itself. Then, look for a clip from the inside of the steering column shaft that can be removed, typically with a pair of needle nose pliers. Next, inject grease into the steering shaft. Finally, reinstall the clip as well as the steering column. The process will vary slightly depending on your vehicle.
