To install an aftermarket steering wheel in a car, truck or SUV, you must remove the original steering wheel from the steering column. Before removing it, ensure that no vehicle functions are affected by the steering wheel change, such as radio or cruise control. Once this is confirmed, the horn cover can be removed. It hides the main connection point and can be pried or popped off (research the steering wheel removal instructions first) if no hardware is on the front or backside. Next, remove the nut or bolt holding the steering wheel to the column. If the steering wheel does not slide off the steering column, a steering wheel puller will be required. With the steering wheel removed, mock up the new steering wheel and adapter to confirm the diameter and distance from the dash will work for you. Dished custom steering wheels will stick out further from the dash than those with a flat bottom. Once the original steering wheel is removed and the replacement is confirmed to fit, the assembly can begin. A steering wheel adapter is usually required to fit the aftermarket steering wheel to the original steering column. Then, follow the instructions included with the adapter and steering wheel. A complete installation will include the horn button."

A quick-release steering wheel works by pressing or pulling a spring release on the quick release adapter, which allows the race car steering wheel to disconnect from the steering column. Installation involves either pushing the steering wheel back into place until an audible "click" is heard by pressing or pulling a locking latch, installing the racing steering wheel, and letting go of the latch to lock the steering wheel onto the steering column.
