Ladder Bars, Kits & Suspensions

Ladder bars are an aftermarket racing suspension component (typically made of tubing), which is used to control wheel hop on vehicles that have coil spring or coil-over shock suspensions. One end of the ladder bars attach to the rear end spring perches, while the other ends are connected to the frame rails in front of the rear tires or ladder bar crossmembers. During a hard launch, the torque from the engine is applied to the rear differential, with energy then transferred quickly to the improved strength/strong ladder bars and chassis, resulting in the front end of the vehicle rising up. This also causes weight to transfer to the rear, which aids in improved traction.

Depending on the manufacturer of the kit, ladder bars will have different steps and instructions. However, most installations require the rear suspension to be at ride height to properly set it up. The rear axles and bearings need to be removed while welding to prevent damage. Any steel brackets that no longer need to be used on the rear axle housing need to be removed as well. Next install the ladder bar brackets either by welding or bolting them on. Then install the ladder bars between the brackets. Make sure there is not excessive binding, which can cause the vehicle not to track straight.

To adjust the ladder bars, the car should be sitting with driver, fuel, racing tires, in the configuration it would be at the race track starting line. Remove the front mounting bolt on the passenger side ladder bar. If the bolt comes out without force, there is little or no pre-load, which is ideal. If the bolt is removed and the front of the bar moves upward a 1/4 of an inch, a small amount of pre-load is needed on the right rear tire. This would be the maximum amount of pre-load that should be used.

When the vehicle doesn't launch straight, the passenger side ladder bar may need pre-load added. To do this, remove the front and top bolts on the passenger ladder bar. Then lower the bar and turn the top heim joint / rod end in about a 1/2 turn. Raise the bar and then reinstall the bolts and tighten the jam nuts. Re-test to confirm a straight launch (for example, rear bumper is parallel to track surface). If needed, add more pre-load. Be careful not to add too much pre-load, as it will sideload other components, causing handling issues or damage to suspension components.

Ladder bars work similar on a truck as they do on cars. They help to prevent wheel hop and axle wrap. They can also aid in hauling or towing as they help strengthen the rear frame and chassis.
