High Performance Gear Drives
Timing sets are very important for proper engine operation and performance. They keep the crankshaft and camshaft correctly clocked to prevent valve-to-piston interference as well as ignite the fuel in the combustion chamber at the correct moment to provide the best power. Gear drives offer a more robust design over belt and chain drives, eliminating any slack or inconsistencies in timing. They also create a blower-like sound that many enjoy in their street rod or custom vehicle. JEGS offers high performance gear drives from high quality manufacturers like Comp Cams, Milodon, Edelbrock, PRW, JEGS, and others. The timing set is what syncs the camshaft with the crank, via gears and a chain or belt. Keeping them properly clocked with each other is essential to prevent pistons crashing into valves on upstrokes, and to keep the engine properly timed and performing well. Chains can stretch over time, though, and belts need to be replaced at regular intervals. A timing gear drive can offer a more robust solution, eliminating chain slack and ensuring timing is always going to be consistent.
This is where you can find SBC gear drive timing sets from brands like Edelbrock, Milodon, JEGS, COMP Cams and Crower. A gear drive for an SBC engine is something that will last the life cycle of the engine, and also has a distinct whine or whirring sound that's reminiscent of the drive system on a supercharger and is noticeable at idle, part throttle or on deceleration. Quieter gear sets are also available, if that's your preference.
Some claim that a timing chain setup is more efficient and that the extra friction and moving parts of an engine gear setup is an issue, but dyno tests between the two systems show a difference of only one or two horsepower. This strong connection and engagement between the crank and camshaft is failure-proof, and installation isn't much different from installing a timing chain or belt. Ensure that the engine is at top dead center, then line up the timing marks on the crank gear and cam drive gear, with the cam gear at 6 o'clock and the crank gear at 12 o'clock. For dual gear setups, the idler needs to be installed so that the larger gear is on the passenger side. Be sure that the gear set clears the front timing cover and adjust for clearance if needed.
