Nerf Bars, Step Bars & Running Boards

Upgrading your pickup or SUV with nerf bars or running boards allows easier access into your vehicle. In most cases pickup trucks and SUVs have higher ground clearance than passenger cars, requiring stepping up and into the vehicle. Pickup truck running boards and nerf bars create a step that helps lower the height your foot has to reach in order to enter the vehicle. Exiting is also safer as you step down onto the bar or board before reaching the ground.

One of the most common accessories added to pickup trucks are nerf bars and running boards. These add-ons are simple to install in most cases and are available in different finishes, matching or complimenting the trim and accessories on the outside of your vehicle. This helps your vehicle stand out from the rest on the street or at an event.

Truck running boards (sometimes referred to as "nerf running boards" or "step running boards") are long horizontal components, usually made of aluminum or fiberglass, that are installed below the doors on a truck or SUV. They provide a step to help the driver and passengers access the vehicle more easily when the doors are higher up than a passenger car. They also can be used to enhance and customize the looks of a vehicle. Unlike nerf bars, running boards are "closed off", with no gaps seen between them and the truck body. The ends are usually wide to help block mud and debris that are flung by the tires.

The steps to install running boards for trucks will vary depending on the manufacturer as well as the vehicle year, make, and model. Most running boards are designed to be a "no-drill" installation, using existing bolt holes in the vehicle frame so that installation can be completely reversed. In most applications, the first step involves locating the holes on each side of the vehicle's frame and removing existing bolts per the instructions so that longer bolts can be used to properly secure the running boards. In some cases, the vehicle needs to be raised to allow easier access to the frame and complete installation. Once the bolts are tightened, a visual inspection and test use to enter and exit the vehicle is done to complete installation. If installing auto running boards, electrical connections will also need to be wired and completed so that the boards are powered up and can retract and extend (for example, on Ford F-Series, Chevy/GM Full Size, and for Ram 1500 pickups).

In most cases, the first step in removing running boards is locating the mounting hardware. In some applications, this may require raising the vehicle to more easily gain access. Once the mounting hardware is located, it can be removed. If the mounting hardware was used to hold more than just the running boards to the frame, the mounting hardware either needs to be reinstalled or replaced with shorter bolts. Once all of the hardware is removed, the running boards will be separated and can be removed from the vehicle.

Nerf bars, also referred to as "truck step bars", are long and tubular bars that are mounted between the front and rear wheels on pickup trucks or SUVs. They can be circular or oval in shape and made from either stainless steel, aluminum, or powder-coated steel. Their purpose is to provide easier access in and out of the vehicle with built-in steps. They also are installed to provide a unique look and appearance.
