Can you reuse LS 5.3 head bolts?
- No, you can not reuse the factory GM LS 5.3L head bolts. These bolts are torque-to-yield and stretch when torqued to specifications so they are designed for one-time use. The JEGS 83408 Head Bolt Kit for 2004-2014 GM LS Engines are not torque torque-to-yield bolts and can be reused but for optimal performance and safety, it is recommended to use new head bolts when assembling or reassembling LS 5.3 engines. How long are the LS head bolts?
- GM LS Engines uses two different sets of under-cover head bolts depending on the heads being used. Cathedral Port Heads used two different lengths of 11mm bolts. (4) 11mm x 103mm & (16) 11mm x 158mm. The Rectangular port heads use (20) 11mmx 158mm. Both heads use the same external lower bolts which are (10) 8mm-1.25 x 48mm. The JEGS 83408 Head Bolt Kit includes head bolts of specific lengths suitable for 2004-2014 GM LS Engines with rectangular port factory heads. Old school easy!
Way easier to use in an engine bay since you don't need to use a failure prone angle gauge that’s hard to read in a tight engine bay. Faster since it doesn’t have to be zeroed & set up for each bolt.
I used these on an aluminum block 6.2 with no issues. Just chase your threads & clean out bolt holes; which should be done anyway.

JEGS FTW!
No issues with the hardware, used them for my ls2 GTO for having to change my lifters. Came with a paper for the proper torque sequences, and didn’t have to use a torque angle gauge for the final pass. Definitely recommend and if ever needed would definitely buy again

Stripped off bolts
I purchased these thinking they were a great value but they have been a problem and costly instead. Had an issue with a lifter and went to pull the head and multiple bolt heads sheered right off.

Poor quality control

-Poor quality control : Double the out of round of Made in China bolts
-No printed torque specs/instructions provided
I noticed bolts were out of round while cleaning and checking threads during pre assembly. Checked with a dial indicator and found they are as much as 0.040" out of round. I checked ARP bolts and it was under 0.012". My set of "made in China" bolts came in under 0.020". I called customer service and they didn't seem to be bothered that they have a quality control issue.
Be warned, you get what you pay for!

Are the provided torque specs for these bolts for a cast iron block only? Looking at the torque specs for iron blocks versus aluminum blocks, all of the torque values seems to be ~10% less for aluminum blocks versus cast iron....
Jegs 555-83408 is not a torque to yield bolt, the same sequence/spec should be followed regardless of iron/aluminum
