Standard shims cannot handle the extreme pressure that high performance racing engines place on the springs. The solution to this problem is seats made from a high-strength steel alloy that hold the spring in place. The cup version of the seat sits outside of the spring and requires the head to be machined, while the locators fit on the inside of the spring and require no machining.
