The MAP sensor reports absolute pressure inside the intake manifold, which the engine controller uses to work out engine load and set fueling and timing. A sensor that drifts rather than fails outright is the awkward case: no hard code, just poor fuel economy, soft throttle response and shift points that feel wrong.
