The oil pressure sending unit is what feeds the gauge and the pressure warning strategy, so when it fails you can see a dead gauge, an erratic reading or a warning light with no actual pressure problem. Before condemning an oil pump, this sensor is the cheap thing to rule out. It threads into the oil filter adapter or cooler housing depending on the engine.
