The input shaft retainer bolts to the front of the manual transmission case and holds the input shaft seal that keeps gear oil in and clutch dust out. It is the part you reach when a manual gearbox starts weeping oil onto the clutch, and since the transmission has to come out to get at it, the seal and retainer are worth doing together.
