The transmission pan holds the fluid and takes every rock and speed bump the underside of the vehicle meets. A dented pan can foul the filter inlet, and a rusted sealing flange will never hold a gasket no matter how carefully it is installed. On a three-speed of this vintage, replacing the pan is often the only way to stop a chronic seep.
