The ambient air sensor feeds outside temperature to the cluster display and to the climate control logic. It usually mounts low in the front airflow, which is exactly where it collects road spray and salt. When it drifts or opens, the displayed temperature goes wrong and automatic climate control starts making decisions on bad data.
