Rear axle fluid is the maintenance item most often skipped entirely, which is unfortunate because it is also the cheapest way to keep a differential alive. The additive package breaks down with heat, and once it does the gear surfaces start to wear. Refilling with fluid matched to the original specification keeps the chemistry compatible with the clutches and seals inside.
