An ignition capacitor exists to keep the high energy switching in the ignition circuit from radiating noise into everything else on the vehicle. When one fails the symptoms are strange rather than dramatic: radio static that tracks engine speed, or sensor readings that get erratic under load. It is an easy part to overlook when chasing electrical gremlins.
