RTV gray is the sealer specified for metal to metal joints that see oil and heat, which is why it shows up in service procedures for oil pans, timing covers, differential housings and water pump surfaces. It cures at room temperature into a flexible gasket that tolerates the flex and thermal movement of those parts. Clean and dry both surfaces first, because RTV will not stick through old sealer or oil film.
