The tone ring is the toothed ring the wheel speed sensor actually reads. It has no moving parts, but a ring with a damaged or rust-swollen tooth produces a signal the module reads as a wheel doing something impossible, which sets an ABS fault that no amount of sensor replacement will fix. Always inspect the ring when a sensor code will not clear.
