The oil pump is the one component every other moving part in the engine depends on. Pumps rarely fail suddenly; they wear until pressure drops at idle when the oil is hot, which is exactly when bearing clearances need it most. If a pump is being replaced, the inlet screen and the pressure relief are worth inspecting at the same time.
