Water is the enemy of a high pressure diesel injection system, so the fuel filter housing has a sensor watching the bottom of the bowl where water separates out and collects. It triggers the warning that tells you to drain the separator. A failed sensor either nags constantly or, worse, stays quiet while water builds.
