The shifter assembly is more than a lever. It carries the detent mechanism, the position sensing and the interlock that keeps the car from leaving park without the brake, and on the Dart it is also the part behind one of the model's better known complaints, a key fob that will not come out of the accessory position. A worn assembly also shows up as a lever that feels vague between gears or a range the cluster reports incorrectly.
