Axle lubricant has to survive sliding contact between hypoid gear teeth under very high pressure, which is a different job from lubricating a bearing. That is why gear oil carries an extreme pressure additive package and why matching the original specification matters, particularly on axles with a limited slip or locking differential where friction behavior is part of the design.
