Active shutters sit behind the grille and close at speed to cut aerodynamic drag, then open when the engine needs cooling air. They also help the engine reach operating temperature faster from cold. When the actuator fails the shutters usually stick in one position, which sets a code and costs either fuel economy or cooling capacity depending on which way they stopped.
