Note: This starter features a new style ratchet bendix drive. If you extend the drive by hand which is easy to do it will not go back in. It takes the torque of the motor to spin the bendix back. You can install the starter with the bendix engaged in the flywheel. When you start the engine it will spin the bendix back in to the non-engaged position.
