AN Fitting
Since WWII, AN (acronym for "Army Navy") fittings have been used for many applications, first starting with military vehicles and aircraft, and then spreading to other industries, including the automotive market. Often misunderstood, AN fitting size is measured by the outside of the hose or tube in 1/16 inch increments. For example a "-8 AN" fitting is for 8/16 or 1/2 inch outside diameter hose. A "-20 AN" fitting is for hose that has an outside diameter of 20/16 or 1 - 4/16 of an inch, further simplified to 1 and 1/4 inch outside diameter hose. When assembled, AN fittings create stronger and more consistent hose connections than clamps. This is accomplished by squeezing both the inside and outside of the hose wall between the nipple and socket of the fitting.
When choosing an AN fitting, first confirm the hose size needed. An AN fitting size chart is helpful if desired. Next, choose the angle needed, whether straight, 45, 90, 180 degree or other option. Then choose the finish (for example blue/red, black, nickel, etc.). From the remaining compatible AN fittings, choose the option that best meets your application needs and budget. Don't forget to purchase AN hose, assembly tools, and any other components needed to complete your project.
