Carburetor Spacer
Located between the carburetor and intake manifold, a carburetor spacer is an optional component that changes how fuel converts from a liquid to vapor. As each engine is different in components and performance, a carb spacer for one may provide improvements while actually decreasing power in a different engine. In racing applications a taller carburetor spacer is helpful at raising the power band of the engine, with more power at higher RPMs. However, there is a trade-off of reduced power at lower RPMs. For street use, the most commonly used carb spacer is a shorter 4-hole version. In the end, experimentation and testing will confirm if a carb spacer will help or hurt engine performance. Also, keep in mind hood clearance limitations any time you raise the height of the carburetor and air cleaner.
When choosing a carburetor spacer for your engine, first confirm the intake manifold and carburetor mounting type (for example square or spread bore, 4500/Dominator, etc.). Next, confirm you have enough space for carburetor and air cleaner under the hood. Then choose either a 4-hole, open, or tapered spacer as well as the material (for example, plastic, aluminum, wood, etc.). From the remaining options choose the one that best fits your needs and budget.
