Harmonic Balancer
As engines run, they create vibrations and harmonics. To combat this imbalance, which can lead to crankshaft and other component failure, a harmonic balancer is used. This disc-shaped component incorporates steel or aluminum and rubber, which absorbs and reduces harmful vibration. It also can be designed with a crank pulley to simplify the accessory drive. Harmonic balancers, which are also referred to as vibration dampers, crank /crankshaft dampers, or torsional dampers, also incorporate a counterweight to externally balance the engine rotating assembly. Over time, the rubber will degrade and separate, causing part failure and lead to engine damage.
When choosing a replacement harmonic balancer, confirm the year, make, model, and engine of the vehicle. Then, select one of the compatible options that meets your needs and budget. For custom and race applications, confirm the year, make, and size of the engine as well as if the crankshaft and rotating assembly is internally or externally balanced. In some applications, different diameters are available with smaller sizes typically for racing applications. From the remaining options, choose a compatible balancer meeting your engine's needs. Don't forget to purchase the matching timing pointer, balancer bolt, and tools such as a harmonic balancer puller and harmonic balancer installer to help you complete your project.
