The lifeblood of your vehicle, engine oil provides two main functions. The first is lubrication between the metal moving parts. Without lubrication, high friction causes excessive part wear, leading to failure. Oil also provides a cooling effect, as heat is transferred from hot components it circulates to other areas of the engine as well as an oil cooler reducing overall temperature. After 3,000 to 7,000 miles (depending on the engine manufacturer), the oil has accumulated a lot of debris, carbon, and other contamination, requiring an engine oil change. It is important to change engine oil at the proper interval, either after a certain number of months or miles, to maintain a well running engine with a long service life.

In some cases more than one weight of oil is acceptable, and the temperature and climate determines which oil should be used, whether seasonal or year round.
