Originally, spoilers were added to the rear of race cars to reduce drag at higher speeds, beginning around 60-70 mph (rear pedestal wings create downforce). This helps keep the rear tires planted on the road. Front spoilers reduce the amount of air going under the car, which can cause lift and consequently loss of both traction and control to occur at high speeds as well. Car manufacturers began adding spoilers along with other ground effects to vehicles, to provide a race car or "sporty" look with more angles and curves.
