Tachometer
No matter what you drive, having instruments and gauges on hand to display your vehicle and engine's vital signs is important. For example, having a temperature gauge lets you know if the engine is getting too hot, and an oil pressure gauge confirms your engine is getting enough oil. The tachometer is another very helpful gauge. You may be asking, "what is a tachometer?" The tachometer displays engine speed in rpms or "revolutions per minute". When the vehicle is not running, the tachometer gauge reads "0" rpms. At idle, the engine rpms will usually hold between 800-1200 rpms, and as you drive the rpms will increase and decrease. Primarily during racing, RPMs are important as the vehicle ideally should be running within a specific RPM range for maximum power. In drag racing, the maximum rpm in the power band should be reached before shifting into the next gear, aided with a shift light option for improved visibility. This makes the tachometer very important for winning races. For street applications tachometers are often added to help give the interior a more racecar-like appearance.
When choosing a tachometer, the first step is determining the mounting position. If the tach will be installed in the dash, the diameter and depth of the gauge needs to match the hole in the instrument panel. For pedestal mounted tachs, locate a position on top of or under the dash that doesn't hinder driver visibility and determine the size that will fit and provide the best visibility.
