Turbocharger
In performance and heavy-duty applications, where additional power is needed, a turbocharger is a great way to literally give an engine a boost. A turbocharger is an exhaust gas-powered component that is bolted to the manifold or header. As exhaust gas exiting the engine enters the turbo, the pressure it creates spins a turbine wheel in the turbine housing side. The exhaust gas then exits the turbocharger into the exhaust system. The turbine wheel is connected to a shaft with a compressor wheel on the opposite end in the compressor housing side of the turbo. On this side, air is sucked in by the compressor wheel and pushed through piping into the carburetor or throttle body. As the engine speeds up, the turbo spools up and increases in speed, drawing in more air and squeezing it into the engine. This increase in air that is added to the engine requires more fuel to prevent a lean condition, and the larger volume of both causes a lot more combustion in a turbocharged engine than on a normally aspirated engine. The resulting extra force on the pistons and engine rotating assembly creates more power.
When looking for a replacement turbocharger for your stock application, first confirm the year, make, model, and engine of your vehicle. Next, confirm there was only one turbocharger option to ensure the proper model is selected to ensure proper fitment and operation. For custom applications, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer with your engine size, planned RPM range, application, and horsepower goal. This will ensure the correct turbocharger is chosen that will meet your goals and needs.
