What Aftermarket Suspension Parts Improve Handling?
Shocks, springs, control arms, and steering components improve handling the most because they control body roll, tire contact, and steering response. Start with the part that fixes your car's biggest handling weakness. That might be nose dive under braking or a vague, wandering feel on the highway.
These performance suspension parts make a noticeable difference on most street-driven cars and trucks:
- Performance shocks and springs that reduce body roll and keep tires planted
- Tubular control arms that correct geometry on lowered or modified vehicles
- Polyurethane bushings that reduce the deflection of worn rubber bushings
- Steering upgrades that sharpen response and reduce play
Browse control arms, spindles & ball joints when you're correcting geometry or replacing worn front-end parts. QA1, one of the suspension brands carried at JEGS, is a good place to start comparing options.
Should You Choose a Lift Kit or a Leveling Kit?
Choose a lift kit if you want more ground clearance and room for larger tires. Choose a leveling kit if you only want to remove the factory rake. A leveling kit raises the front to match the rear, while a lift kit raises the whole truck.
Taller lifts change more of the suspension, so suspension kits for them include more components. JEGS stocks 6 in. lift kits for Chevy/GM 1500, Toyota Tundra, Ford F-250, and Ram 2500 trucks, many with shocks included so damping matches the new height.
Top sellers in this category come from Rough Country, Tuff Country, and Superlift Suspension Systems. If you want to replace the rear leaf springs on a midsize truck, ICON Vehicle Dynamics offers leaf packs. One example is a multi-rate leaf pack for the 2019-up Ford Ranger.
What's the Difference Between Shocks and Struts?
A strut is a structural part of the suspension, while a shock only dampens spring movement. Struts support vehicle weight and help set alignment angles, so replacing one can change how your wheels sit. Shocks can usually be swapped without changing alignment.
Shocks mount separately from the springs on most solid-axle trucks and older muscle cars. Many modern cars use struts up front and shocks in the rear, so check your setup before you order. On lifted or lowered vehicles, choose shocks sized for the new ride height so they don't top out or bottom out.
Worn dampers cause bouncing, nose dive, and uneven tire wear. Replace shocks and struts in pairs on the same axle to keep handling balanced. Shop shocks, struts & springs by vehicle to match the correct length, valving, and mounting style.
Do You Need a Wheel Alignment After Suspension Work?
Yes, you need a wheel alignment after replacing any part that changes suspension geometry or steering linkage. That includes control arms, tie rod ends, struts, lift kits, and lowering springs. Skipping it can leave your steering wheel off-center and wear your tires unevenly.
Changing ride height shifts caster and camber, which affect straight-line stability, steering feel, and tire wear. Toe changes too, and even a small toe error can wear out tires quickly. Lifted trucks often need extra caster correction to keep the steering stable at highway speed.
Schedule the alignment once the vehicle has settled at its new ride height. If your shop runs out of adjustment range, browse steering & alignment parts for adjustable components that bring specs back within range. Bring your new parts list to the shop so the tech knows what changed.
How Do Traction Bars and 4-Link Setups Help Drag Racing?
Traction bars and 4-link setups help drag racing launches by controlling axle wrap and planting the rear tires. When a leaf-spring car launches hard, the axle can twist and cause wheel hop. That lost traction costs you time on the launch.
For leaf-spring cars, bolt-on traction bars & wheelie bars are a common fix. Wheelie bars keep the front end from rising too far on launch. A 4-link replaces the factory rear locating arms with adjustable bars, so you can tune instant center and pinion angle.
Build or tune your setup with suspension components like rear 4-link bars, rod ends and jam nuts, torque arms, and bump stops. Read our 4-link suspension setup guide before you set bar angles or adjust preload. Rod ends let you fine-tune bar length, and jam nuts lock each setting in place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aftermarket Suspension Parts
When Should You Replace Ball Joints or Control Arm Bushings?
Replace them when you notice clunking over bumps, wandering steering, or uneven tire wear. Check for play in the ball joint and for cracked or torn bushing rubber. Replace both sides at the same time to keep the front end balanced.
How Do You Find Suspension Parts That Fit Your Vehicle?
Use the Add a Vehicle tool to enter your year, make, and model. JEGS then shows the parts listed for your vehicle. Check each product's fitment notes for lift height, drivetrain, or trim requirements before you order.
What Are the Advantages of Air Suspension?
Air suspension lets you adjust ride height by changing air pressure. Air bags can also help a truck carry heavy loads or tow without sagging. Browse air bags & air suspension to compare options for your vehicle.
What Do Bump Stops Do?
Bump stops limit suspension travel so parts don't make metal-to-metal contact at full compression. They protect your shocks, springs, and frame on hard hits. Lifted and lowered vehicles often need different-length bump stops to match the new travel.
Are Coilovers a Good Upgrade for a Street Car?
Coilovers are a good upgrade if you want adjustable ride height and damping in one package. They combine the shock and spring into a single unit, which simplifies tuning. For a daily driver, choose street-friendly spring rates so the ride stays comfortable.
