Engine & Fuel Management Systems

Having an engine or fuel management system provides the best optimization of air and fuel as well as ignition timing (depending on the system). By calculating the correct amount of fuel and proper timing from input sensors and components, engine performance is maximized for startup, idle, fuel consumption, power, cruise, and acceleration.

Updating your carbureted setup to EFI (electronic fuel injection) makes a true "night-and-day" difference. An aftermarket fuel management system for cars and trucks installed on an engine that was originally equipped with a carburetor provides optimum spark and fuel for the engine, resulting in increased performance and reliability.

Active fuel management systems are used on select 2007 - present GM/Chevy vehicles such as the Chevrolet Impala, Tahoe, Silverado/Sierra, Suburban, Yukon, and Avalanche. The engines it was available on include the GM 3.9, 5.3, 6.0, and 6.2. Most vehicles have "AFM" badging either on the vehicle exterior or under the hood (on the engine or vehicle information label). The 8th digit of the VIN number can also be researched online to confirm if the vehicle is equipped with Active Fuel Management.

In automotive applications, the vehicle fuel management system is an electronic engine computer that gathers information from input sensors (like oxygen sensors, coolant temperature sensors, air temperature sensors, throttle position sensors, and other components) that provide information depending on the application. The ECU unit then makes calculations and adjusts output of fuel and ignition system timing to provide the best spark and fuel/air ratio for optimum engine performance.

A stand alone engine management system for fuel is an automotive EFI unit that controls the fuel system only. Stand alone fuel management systems do not affect other systems such as the ignition or transmission. Most stand alone fuel management system options are offered either with self-learning capability or allow tuning of the ECU via a laptop with fuel management system software.
