Automatic Transmission Shifters: Ratchet, Gated & Floor-Mount Options

Automatic transmission shifters come in three main styles: ratchet, gated, and standard floor-mount designs. A ratchet shifter lets you click up through the gears without overshooting, which is why it's common in drag racing. A gated shifter uses a gate plate with a defined stop for each gear, so you get repeatable shifts on the street or strip.

Popular automatic shifter options at JEGS include the following brands and parts.

  • B&M Pro-Ratchet shifters for ratchet-style shifting
  • TCI Outlaw, Thunder Stick, and Diablo shifters
  • Gate plates that set the shift pattern on gated shifters
  • Reverse lockouts that help prevent accidental shifts into reverse

A floor shifter also works well if you're moving away from a column shift. Shop automatic transmission shifter components for the parts that complete your install. Planning a swap? Read our guide to automatic transmissions for LS engine swaps.

Manual Transmission Shifters & Short-Throw Upgrades

A short-throw shifter shortens the distance your hand travels between gears, so you get quicker, more precise shifts from your manual transmission. It's a common upgrade for T56, TKX, and TR-6060 owners who want a tighter, more direct feel. If your factory shifter feels loose or worn, a complete aftermarket unit can restore a solid, positive engagement.

Manual shifter options in this category include the following brands and kits.

CO2 & Electric Solenoid Shifter Kits for Drag Racing

CO2 and electric solenoid shifter kits shift your transmission for you, so you can keep both hands on the wheel during a pass. An air shifter uses pressurized CO2 to move the shifter, while an electric shifter uses a solenoid. Both types take the timing of each shift out of your hands.

Kits in this category include the following.

  • Biondo Quarter Stick CO2 shifter kits for Powerglide transmissions
  • Shifnoid electric shifter kits for B&M Pro-Ratchet shifters

These kits help remove late or missed shifts, which can make your runs more consistent. Many racers pair a shifter kit with a shift light so each shift happens at the same rpm. Before you buy, confirm the kit matches your shifter model and the number of gears in your transmission. Check your class rules too, since some racing classes restrict automatic shifting devices.

Shifter Knobs, Handles & SFI 48.1 Shift Boots

Shifter knobs, handles, and shift boots change how your shifter looks and feels. A shift boot also covers the opening around the shifter. If you race, your sanctioning body may require an SFI 48.1 shift boot, so check the rulebook before you order.

Shop these options to finish your shifter setup.

  • Joes Racing Products SFI 48.1 shift boots for racing applications
  • Trans Dapt heavy-duty rubber shift boots for street builds
  • Lokar shifter knobs and boots for custom interiors
  • Chevrolet Performance shifter handles for a factory-style look

When you replace shifter knobs, match the thread size or adapter to your shifter stick. A taller handle can move the knob closer to your hand, while a shorter one can reduce throw. Choose a shift boot that fits both your shifter base and the opening in your floor or console.

How to Choose Automotive Shifters & Components for Your Build

Start with your transmission type, then confirm fitment and decide how you'll use the car. Use the JEGS vehicle selector to see parts that fit your year, make, and model. From there, compare street-friendly and strip-focused shifters, then choose the supporting parts that complete your shifter system.

Keep these checks in mind as you shop.

Frequently Asked Questions About Automotive Shifters

What are the symptoms of a bad neutral safety switch?

The most common sign is an engine that won't crank in park or neutral, or cranks in only one of those positions. You may also notice the engine starts in a drive gear, which is a safety hazard. On many vehicles the same switch controls the backup lights, so lights that don't work in reverse can point to the switch.

What does a neutral safety switch do?

A neutral safety switch prevents the engine from starting unless an automatic transmission is in park or neutral. On manual transmissions, a similar clutch switch requires you to press the clutch pedal before the engine will start. Many switches also turn on the backup lights when you shift into reverse.

How do you remove and change a shift knob?

Most shift knobs either thread onto the shifter stick or are held in place with a set screw. For a threaded knob, loosen any jam nut and turn the knob counterclockwise. For a set-screw knob, loosen the screw and pull the knob off, then install the new knob and tighten it in place.

Is a short-throw shifter worth it for a street car?

A short-throw shifter can make a street car feel more responsive by shortening the distance between gears. The tradeoff is that shifts may take more effort and can transmit more vibration, depending on the design. If you drive in traffic every day, consider how much shift effort you're comfortable with before you upgrade.

Do I need a manual valve body to use a ratchet shifter?

Not always. Many ratchet shifters work with a stock valve body in a standard shift pattern. Racing setups often pair them with a reverse-pattern manual valve body. Check the shifter's instructions to confirm which valve body and shift pattern it supports.
