Exhaust clamps are made from either steel or stainless steel. Automotive exhaust clamp sizes vary from a 2" exhaust clamp to 3" exhaust clamps and as large as 6 inches in diameter. To use an exhaust u-bolt clamp, first connect the two pipes together with one exhaust pipe sliding over the other. Once you have each pipe rotated into the position you want and the connection is made, the u bolt is placed over the middle of where the pipes overlap. Next, the saddle is lined up with the u bolt threads on each side. Finally, the nuts are installed and tightened until a crimp is made. This will create a long lasting and leak-free connection for your exhaust system.

There are two types of exhaust band clamps (sometimes referred to as a muffler clamp). The first is a butt-joint clamp. The second is a preformed joint clamp. The butt joint clamp is like an exhaust clamp sleeve, designed to seal two pipes that are the same diameter and are pushed up against each other. Once you clock the exhaust pipes into the position you want, slide each end into the clamp. Then tighten the bolts to complete a tight and leak-free seal. A preformed joint clamp is designed to connect two different size pipes, specifically a pipe to a muffler or exhaust tip, with the installation identical to a butt-joint clamp.

There are different types of automotive exhaust hangers using different methods of installation. The first type of no weld exhaust hangers involves a flat bar with a row of vertical holes to allow multiple connection points to the vehicle body or frame. At one end of the bar is a rubber connector to allow flexing and vibration dampening. The other end of the rubber connection is attached to a clamp, which goes around the exhaust pipe. Locations of exhaust clamps can vary based on clearance for a proper mounting surface to the vehicle as well as on the exhaust system. Ideally, clamps are located at connections, to prevent sagging. They can also be added at the front of or behind components like mufflers, resonators, or catalytic converters. Another type of exhaust hanger is similar but instead of a clamp on the end, it is bent perpendicular with a slight curve and is designed to wedge between an exhaust u-clamp and the pipe at an exhaust system pipe connection. Other designs of exhaust hangers include rods welded directly to the exhaust pipe or components and then hung from rubber exhaust hangers, which are installed on metal brackets that are welded to the vehicle body.
